Care and Maintenance

Daily Care of Your Countertop

A Craft Art wood countertop or chopping block is one of the easiest things to maintain in your room.  Not only are the surfaces beautiful, but they can be virtually forever refreshed and always looking as new as they did when you first received them.

Care and Maintenance

Chopping block or wood countertop  maintenance involves the same two steps of a granite countertop:  Daily washing and cleaning, and periodic re-oiling (wood–like granite–needs to be sealed periodically).

Craft-Art tops should be cleaned with a 15% white vinegar/water solution. Vinegar is a well known disinfectant that kills virtually all bacteria.  As is the case with most stone countertops, DO NOT use ammonia-based cleaners; over time the ammonia will soften and/or cloud the finish.

With a protective finish very similar to high-pressure laminate products (e.g., Formica, Wilsonart), pools or drops of standing water on countertops will not damage the surface if not left on for long periods of time.

Our special Crosslinked Tung Oil varnish used to finish Craft-Art countertops is also used to finish wood floors. It is a tough, hard finish that is designed to take abuse. Eventually, through the course of washing the top, some of the finish will be rubbed off. This can take anywhere from one year to several years, depending on how much you use the countertop.

Craft Art’s Penetrating Oil finish requires more maintenance, but remains the most common finish for gourmet kitchens and chefs who require highly functional chopping blocks and cutting boards.  The finish is 100% food-safe and contains natural mineral oil and beeswax.
